2022 Mazda CX 9, All you want to know about a Great Car

The 2022 Mazda CX 9 Sprinkles in More Value for Less

It’s time to check out the 2022 Mazda CX 9. For 2022, the largest Mazda SUV is spicing things up by adding more value while lowering the price. So with the Mazda CX-9, you will get more for less, but let’s see if it’s worth it.

Is the 2022 Mazda CX-9 worth buying?

Yes, if you want a little more space without giving up power or luxury comfort, then the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is the perfect option to consider. This is especially true if you live in an area that receives inclement weather because all-wheel drive is now standard for each model.

The Mazda CX-9 starts at about $36,505, and this price includes the destination fee. This is $455 less than the outgoing model when equipped with optional AWD. But prices are a little higher than the models with front-wheel drive.

What’s new for the 2022 CX-9?

Aside from standard AWD, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 also gained a new trim level. The Mazda CX-9 Touring Plus trim serves as an affordable mid-level option. It provides more convenience features without the need to move up to the more expensive Grand Touring trim.

The Touring Plus trim builds upon the Touring trim by adding the Premium Package. Then it adds ventilated front seats, memory settings for the driver’s seat, a gloss black grille, aluminum roof rails, and a frameless rear-view mirror.

For some context, here are the Mazda CX-9 trim levels:

  • Maxda CX-9 Sport – $36,505
  • Mazda CX-9 Touring – $38,655
  • Mazda CX-9 Touring Plus – $42,885
  • Mazda CX-9 Carbon Edition – $44,805
  • Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring – $45,665

The Touring Premium package can be added for an additional $2,080. So, upgrade cost of about $4,000 to move up from the Touring trim to the Touring Plus trim is pretty reasonable.

Some people may feel like making the FWD models unavailable isn’t the best move. Especially those in warmer climates who don’t need AWD. Plus, adding AWD can lower the fuel economy. However, it’s actually a beneficial move.

The Mazda i-Activ AWD system reportedly enhances driving dynamics, handling, and vehicle control while drivers get to enjoy the experience on more types of terrain and conditions. The system continuously monitors weight distribution and shifts power to wheels that need it most.

This provides drivers with an instant response to their inputs. Plus, each CX-9 model comes with G-Vectoring Control Plus and Off-Road Traction Assist.

How does the 2022 CX-9 perform?

The 2022 Mazda CX-9 comes with a 2.5-liter turbo-four that pumps out 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. With premium fuel, you can increase these figures to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The CX-9 can accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 7.1 seconds.

While it may not have as responsive steering compared to other Mazda models, the CX-9 still provides an athletic response with superior corning control. It’s light on its feet and doesn’t feel like a larger model.

The suspension is a bit firm, but most impacts are absorbed with ease. Also, the interior provides a luxurious sense of quiet. Best of all, the Mazda CX-9 is easy to maneuver in tight city areas.

  • HIGHSFun-loving chassis, premium interior finishes, handsome exterior styling.

  • LOWSSnug third row seat, limited cargo room behind third row, could use a few more horsepower.

  • VERDICTWith the CX-9, Mazda applies its hallmark athleticism to a three-row family hauler with enticing results.

Overview

Combining a handsome exterior, a near-luxury interior, and a surprisingly fun-to-drive nature, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 is the three-row crossover for buyers who’d rather be driving a Miata but can’t live with a car that’s so space-challenged. The CX-9’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides adequate acceleration, but its chassis is what delivers its trademark driving verve.

The CX-9’s crisp steering and sporty cornering attitude remind us more of a sports sedan than an SUV. Inside, occupants are treated to a premium cabin but the third row is admittedly cramped, especially in comparison to roomier rivals such as the Hyundai Palisade, the Kia Telluride, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Still, this trade-off seems worth it to us as driving enthusiasts, and we expect other likeminded folks will see it the same way.

What’s New for 2022?

A new mid-range Touring Plus trim joins the CX-9 lineup for 2022. It comes with all of the equipment from the Touring model but adds ventilated front seats, power adjustments for the driver’s seat, black-painted 20-inch wheels, black grille trim, aluminum-colored roof rails, and a frameless rearview mirror. Elsewhere in the lineup, all-wheel drive is now standard

Of the CX-9’s four trim levels, the Touring model represents the best value. It offers plenty of niceties, including a power-operated rear liftgate, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and keyless entry with push-button start. To get the CX-9’s new second-row captain’s chairs—a feature many three-row SUV buyers want—opt for the Touring Premium package, which also adds two additional USB ports in the third row, a Bose audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio, fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, and second-row window sunshades.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

In a segment where V-6 power is common, Mazda took a risk by offering a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the CX-9’s sole powertrain in the hope of a gain in fuel-economy. It does eke out an advantage over some competitors, but it’s slight. The engine sounds gutsy and managed a class-competitive result in our acceleration testing, where it scooted our Grand Touring test vehicle from zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

The 2021 CX-9 is clearly the driving enthusiast’s family hauler; surprisingly light on its feet, it often feels as if you’re driving a smaller SUV. The suspension is firm, but it’s still supple enough riding over rough stretches of road. The steering, while not as communicative as other Mazda’s, still imparts vigor that’s missing from other crossovers. The firm suspension and accurate steering culminate in superior cornering control.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Apart from its solid acceleration performance, the CX-9 is, according to the EPA, more fuel efficient than many of its rivals. The front-wheel drive model earned EPA estimates of 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway; all-wheel drive drops both of those figures by 2 mpg. In our real-world highway fuel-economy test, the all-wheel-drive CX-9 matched its 26-mpg rating. For more information about the CX-9’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The CX-9’s cabin wows with upscale materials and detailed styling, but compared with other SUVs in the segment, it’s short on passenger and cargo space. Open the door and the CX-9’s interior welcomes passengers with an upscale cabin that wouldn’t look out of place in an Audi. Mazda has tastefully arranged soft-touch plastic with handsome graining, brushed aluminum, and, in our Signature-trim test car, genuine rosewood.

The CX-9’s smaller measurements mean real-world limitations. We managed to fit just two of our carry-on suitcases behind the Mazda’s third row, which one-third of what the Ford Explorer could muster. The CX-9’s second and third rows of seats fold easily for quick configuration changes, though, and the resultant load floor is flat, making it easy to load bulky items. With second- and third-row seats down, the CX-9 accommodated 25 of our carry-on cases.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All CX-9s come with Mazda’s user-friendly infotainment system and a 10.3-inch display. The software is easy to navigate and the graphics are crisp, plus the Mazda Connected Services suite provides remote access to vehicle status, telematics, and key operations such as remote start and remote locking. Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, HD radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all standard features. A wireless smartphone charging pad is new for the 2021 model year but isn’t offered on the base Sport model.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A host of driver-assistance technologies are standard across the CX-9 lineup, including convenient adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist features. For more information about the CX-9’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  •  Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  •  Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  •  Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mazda offers an adequate protection plan for buyers of new CX-9s. What it doesn’t offer is something that both the GMC Acadia and the Toyota Highlander do: Complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  •  Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
  •  Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  •  No complimentary scheduled maintenance
