5 Things You Want to Know About the 2023 Mazda CX-60 SUV

Why should you be interested in the Mazda CX 60 SUV? This vehicle won’t cross either ocean or become part of the North American market, but it has some of what we will eventually see. The CX-60 is a new plug-in-hybrid SUV for the European market that gives us an idea of what the CX-70 will offer when it arrives in the United States.

Let’s take a look.

Check out the power of the Mazda CX-60

The 2023 CX-60 is the first SUV built on the new platform created by the brand. This new SUV is larger, longer, and more luxurious than the CX-50. This new architecture should underpin many of the future PHEV models.

Power for this new Mazda SUV comes from a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. Total power reaches 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The claimed electric range is 39 miles using the 17.8-kWh battery pack.

What makes this Mazda SUV special?

If all we had to show was the hybrid powertrain, there wouldn’t be much to talk about, but that’s not all. Here are five things that make the CX-60 interesting.

1. A camera that can see through this Mazda SUV

The See-Through View Camera is a cool new Mazda SUV feature
See-Through View Camera | Mazda

Mazda calls it the See-Through View camera system, and it allows you to see everything around your car. Often, the body of a vehicle can obscure the view of a camera; with this new system, that doesn’t happen. This will make parking the CX-60 much easier.

2. The Mazda CX-60 has an advanced memory setting

Memory settings in a vehicle usually relate to the key fob used. With this new Mazda SUV, the Driver Personalization System uses the driver-facing camera to know which driver is behind the wheel to set the seats, steering wheel, mirrors, head-up display, and stereo system to your desired preferences.

3. More drive modes mean more driving pleasure

Typically, Mazda vehicles only have a Sport setting or an Off-Road mode for some vehicles. The Mazda CX-60 will be the first model to bring five driving modes to the mix. These five Mi-Drive modes are Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing, and EV.

4. Finally, an eight-speed transmission in a Mazda SUV

Although Mazda vehicles are fun to drive, the six-speed Aisin automatic transmission is antiquated in a world with many vehicles on the road with eight or 10 gears. The 2023 Mazda CX-60 receives an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that is smoother and more responsive than the outgoing transmission.

5. The Mazda CX-60 offers a better digital connection for you

You’ll have three useful screens inside this new Mazda SUV. The digital instrument cluster is now 12.3-inches in size. That’s an upgrade from the 7.0-inch model in older Mazda vehicles. The head-up display of the CX-6 is three times larger than the CX-30 giving you the information you desire right in front of you during your drive.

Is the CX-60 bigger than the CX-5?

The new Mazda CX-60 is not a small SUV, but it’s not big enough to be called a full-size model. The CX-60 is longer than the CX-5 by 20 cm. The CX-60 also brings a longer wheelbase to the market. This allows you to have an SUV that offers more comfort than the popular CX-5 while delivering a great drive, something Mazda is well known for providing.

Even though we aren’t going to see the Mazda CX-60 in the United States, it does give us a glimpse at what we should expect from this brand when the CX-70 arrives.

Mazda’s most important model in a decade is also its most powerful vehicle yet

This is the 2023 Mazda CX-60, the Japanese automaker’s most important vehicle in a decade. Why? Well, it builds on the immensely popular CX-5, and now for the very first time, Mazda has produced a plug-in hybrid with the CX-60. Believe it or not, the combined power output from the PHEV system makes this humble crossover, the most powerful Mazda in history.

While it won’t be coming to the United States, the CX-60 debuts the brand’s intent to take on the mid-size luxury SUV segment in other markets. It does however give us a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming CX-70, heading our way. This crop of upcoming Mazda SUVs should serve as an alternative to premium German rivals, that currently dominate this space.

The crossover segment is fiercely competitive and in order to distinguish itself, Mazda had to do something different. They chose to play on their strengths by offering up something that the brand is famous for, a phenomenal drive.

As a result, the CX-60 has an all-new platform called the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture that’s compatible with a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel-drive layout.

Available Trims

At launch, the Mazda CX-60 is available in three trims

  • Exclusive line
  • Homura
  • Takumihybrid
2023 Mazda CX-60 Performance, Price, and Photos - image 1079688

Regardless of the trim you choose, the CX-60 features the all-new naturally aspirated e-Skyactive 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The gas engine produces 192 horsepower. It’s paired with a 100 kW electric motor that produces 136 horsepower.

Combined, the powertrain has an output of 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, making the CX-60, the most powerful production Mazda, ever. Power goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which you can also control using the paddle shifters.

A 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery powers the electric motor and it allows the CX-60 to go up to 40 miles in electric mode. This battery supports up to 7.2 kW and you should be able to charge it up in about 4 hours.

Moving on to driving modes, you have five to choose from the Mi-Drive Mazda system standard across all three trims

  • Normal
  • Sport
  • Off-Road
  • Towing
  • EV Mode

In a bid to improve the dynamics of the CX-60, Mazda has also worked on fine-tuning the chassis, which now blends comfort with driving pleasure emphasizing Jinba Ittai – a feeling of oneness between the car and driver.

With the additional weight of the battery pack, this was a given. However, don’t expect it to be as nimble as the CX-5. The CX-60 has a bigger footprint, however, it should provide a superior drive when compared to the competition.

The Mazda CX-60’s styling is familiar yet different. You can clearly see the Mazda influence and the front facia might remind you of the CX-5, albeit with a bit more chrome. But the proportions are clearly odd. The long hood and extra length convey its rear-wheel-drive intent and as a result, it doesn’t look like your typical crossover that packs a transverse engine.

Further, the lack of character lines and the extra length on the car’s sides are clearly influenced by the Japanese philosophy of “less is more.” The contrast between the new CX-60’s high beltline and the sloping roofline towards the rear showcase this nicely.

With a wide grille integrated into the new LED headlights as standard, the front appearance is unmistakably Mazda. The tail-lights meanwhile are similar to those on the CX-5.

A brief look at how the three trims differ

The base-exclusive line features plastic body cladding and flat plastic trim around the windows and 18″ rims. The mid-spec Homura takes a sportier approach with a blacked-out honeycomb grille and larger 20-inch rims along with body-colored cladding.

The top-of-the-line Takumi trim offers a signature bar-type structure on the grille with chrome wing mirrors and 20-inch machined alloy wheels. These changes do make it appear like the most premium Mazda to date.

INTERIOR QUALITY AND TECHNOLOGY

2023 Mazda CX-60 Performance, Price, and Photos - image 1084056
Both the Exclusive-line and Homura trims feature an all-black interior. The top-of-the-line Takumi features a white Nappa leather interior, with maple wood inserts and exquisite stitching on the fabric dash

Cars like the Mazda CX-5 always had an edge in terms of interior design and build quality when compared to the likes of the Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, and Nissan X-Trail. But with the Mazda CX-60, the brand now faces a tough task in competing with high-end German SUVs.

To showcase its upscale aspirations, Mazda has seriously up the ante on the inside. Fine materials such as maple wood, metal, and premium Japanese fabrics on the dashboard, complete with Nappa leather interior with contrast stitching on the top-spec Takumi trim. There are few tactile buttons on the dashboard, and the cabin emphasizes sleek lines.

Clearly, one area where the CX-60 shines is with rear-seat legroom, thanks to its longer wheelbase over the CX-5. What should make it feel even roomier is the optional sunroof which should flood enough natural light into the cabin.

The CX-60 is pretty featured packed. Right from the base trim, you get heated front seats and heated steering, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto mobile phone compatibility.

Other standard features include a head-up display, a 12.3-inch screen for the infotainment system, and an equally large driver’s display. The Homura trim stuff like ambient lighting, ventilated front and rear seats premium 12-speaker Bose surround sound system.2023 Mazda CX-60 Performance, Price, and Photos - image 1079770

Another noteworthy tech feature is a facial recognition feature, that makes use of a camera. It identifies your eye level and body size and automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, external mirrors, and flat-screen display (Homura and Takumi trims) accordingly.

The list of safety and driver-assist features is pretty exhaustive as you’d expect for a vehicle in this class. Apart from the airbags and ABS which come as standard, the CX-60 also packs

MAIN COMPETITION

2023 Mazda CX-60 Performance, Price, and Photos - image 1084062

As Mazda is taking things premium with its CX-60, the primary competitors are the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and the Mercedes Benz GLC. You can also include the Volvo XC-60, Lexus RX, and Land Rover Discovery Sport to that list.

Here’s how the base trims of each model stack up. Priced in the mid $40,000 range, all of them offer a four-cylinder aside for the Lexus, which features a V-6. The only other car that has a hybrid option here is the Volvo XC 60, but the CX-60 features a hybrid right from the base trim.

Up until now, compared to the rest of the industry, Mazda hadn’t really embraced electrification. But that’s starting to change. Mazda eased it in with models like the Mazda-2 hybrid and the MX-30, but the CX-60 represents a significant shift in the Japanese brand’s strategy to begin the transition to complete electrification of its line-up by 2030 and this Mazda Hybrid sure does set the tone on where the brand wants to go.

It is part of Mazda’s SUV lineup expansion, that will destroy its luxury competitors. It also includes models like the CX-70, CX-80, and CX90, due over the coming two years. The CX-70 with two rows and CX-90 with three rows (set to replace the CX-9) will cater to North American markets. Expect more Mazda Hybrid models to follow suit.

Mazda’s CX-60 Provides an Early Glimpse of the Brand’s Upscale SUVs

The new Euro model’s longitudinal-engine platform will also underpin the upcoming CX-70 and CX-90.

MAZDA

Mazda’s push upscale enters a new phase with the freshly launched European-market CX-60, a model that is closely related to the CX-70 we will be able to buy here. And early indicators are promising.

Sitting on Mazda’s new Skyactiv scalable architecture, the CX-60 is the first in a series of longitudinally engined SUVs intended to move the brand positioning closer to premium rivals. The CX-70 will be wider and, we’re told, styled with American tastes is mind—meaning it should possess more visual presence than the somewhat timid-looking CX-60, which is roughly the size of a BMW X3.

However, we have nothing but praise for the quality and style of the CX-60’s cabin, which Mazda says contemporary Japanese design has inspired. Our sample car, in the plushest Takumi specification, featured wood door trim, a dashboard faced with woven fabric, and shiny metal accents that seemed inspired by the fenders of a ’50s Cadillac. Digital instruments and a 12.3-inch central display screen are standard, but the CX-60 keeps conventional HVAC controls, and the CX-70 likely will too.

Strangely, although the large display supports touch input when running Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, it doesn’t for Mazda’s native navigation system, which still needs to be commanded through the click-wheel controller.

MAZDA

Being a Mazda, there is plenty of powertrain innovation. The base powerplant, which has yet to arrive in Europe but should be in the U.S. CX-70 at launch, will be a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six that uses variable compression and foregoes the turbocharging that has become all but standard in this part of the market. In Europe, the CX-60 will also be offered with a new 3.3-liter e-Skyactiv D diesel-six—for which Mazda is targeting an impressive thermal efficiency of more than 40 percent—but this is highly unlikely to make it to the States. Power and torque ratings have not been revealed.

The car we drove was fitted with the least exciting new powerplant, although the most innovative one. This is a plug-in hybrid, Mazda’s first, and we anticipate it will be offered in the CX-70 as well. It uses the 188-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder from the CX-5 in conjunction with a 173-hp electric motor that sits between the engine and a new eight-speed gearbox.

2023 mazda cx60 eurospec

MAZDA

The transmission uses an electronically controlled clutch pack rather than a torque converter to aid low-speed efficiency, and the same gearbox is set to be offered with the six-cylinder engines. Total system output for the PHEV is 323 horsepower, with a 17.8-kWh battery pack able to deliver up to 39 miles of EV range under Europe’s generally optimistic WLTP testing protocol.

While an impressive figure, that’s still short of the Euro-cycle EV range results for the Toyota RAV4 PHEV or the Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 Extended Range PHEV. The Mazda’s battery can be fully recharged from 240-volt Level 2 equipment in a claimed two hours, 20 minutes or, alternatively, topped off courtesy of the engine burning extra gasoline.

Under electric power, the CX-60 PHEV is smooth and refined. The motor drives through the gearbox, so there is the unusual (for an EV) sensation of gears shifting, and there is enough urge to keep ahead of urban traffic. But the transition to combustion power is less elegant, even using the blended Hybrid mode, with a noticeable pause as the four-cylinder fires up. As in the CX-5, the 2.5-liter is not a charismatic companion, growing loud and sounding increasingly coarse when worked hard.

Although the redline is 6500 rpm, the engine already feels tight and reluctant at 5500 rpm. Once everything is pulling, acceleration is strong—an estimated low- to mid-five-second 60-mph time should make this the brand’s quickest car since the RX-7. But it seems likely the six-cylinder gasoline engine will be much more of an experiential highlight.

2023 mazda cx60 eurospec

MAZDA

Fortunately, the chassis is more satisfying than the engine, combining compliance and athleticism in the finest Mazda tradition. The CX-60 resists understeer well for a vehicle of its size and shape, although there is little sense of the rear torque bias Mazda claims for the PHEV’s all-wheel-drive system. Ride quality is on the firm side but stayed acceptable even when riding on the (largest available) 20-inch wheels, with body control staying tight during hard cornering.

While the CX-70 will be a different car—as will the related CX-90—our first impression of Mazda’s new architecture is positive. And although the company’s first plug-in-hybrid system is less impressive, we are still very much looking forward to experiencing the new straight-six engine.
