VOLKSWAGEN AMAROK (2022): THE PICKUP EXPANDS, MODERNIZES ITS INTERIOR AND FOCUSES ON DIESEL
Volkswagen presents the second generation of its pickup. Still called Amarok, this model now sports an attractive design, combined with a high-tech interior and dimensions revised upwards. Photos, diesel engine, dimensions, interior, equipment… We take you around the owner of the new Volkswagen Amarok.
After months of teasing, he finally points the tip of his hood. The new Volkswagen Amarok is unveiled Thursday, July 7, 2022 by the German manufacturer, which inaugurates the second generation of its pickup inaugurated in 2010. Made in South Africa, this new Amarok is a technical cousin of the Ford Ranger. It still sports a design of its own, receives a much more modern interior than before and is available in several formats.
The new Volkswagen Amarok is 5.35 metres long and 9.6 centimetres longer compared to its predecessor. The wheelbase gains 17.3 centimeters to reach a total of 3.27 meters. Volkswagen wants to offer more space to passengers seated in the rear of this new Amarok, which is offered in single and double cab versions. Including mirrors, the width of the vehicle is set at 2.20 meters.
Amarok’s design gets sexier
Aesthetically, this second generation of the German pickup stands out for its “more expressive and impressive” design. The style is marked by IQ front headlights. Light and LED taillights, a C-shaped light signature, a grille that joins the front bumper, square-shaped wheel arches, 21-inch alloy wheels, or even Amarok lettering inscribed over the entire width of the bucket.
1,160 kilos of payload for the pick-up
Let’s talk about this dumpster, precisely. According to Volkswagen, it can accommodate up to two europalettes or 500 kilos of cargo. The cargo can even be attached as needed, or protected via an electrically deployed blanket. The payload of the Amarok is set at 1,160 kilos. The German pickup can tow up to 3.5 tons thanks to its 4Motion all-wheel drive.
Diesel reigns supreme over the engine range
Under the hood of its new Amarok, Volkswagen offers no less than three four-cylinder 2.0 TDI diesel engines whose power varies from 150 to 209 horsepower. A 3.0 V6 TDI diesel block is also available, with a power set at 241 or 250 horsepower depending on the market. In gasoline, buyers must be satisfied with the 2.3 TSI block whose power still reaches 302 horsepower.
As standard, all engines are paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the 204-horsepower model. Six- and five-speed manual transmissions are planned, as well as a six-speed automatic transmission. No hybridization system is announced.
A high-tech dashboard
Where the Amarok evolves well thanks to the arrival of this new generation, it is on board its interior. The pickup’s dashboard adopts an 8-inch Digital Cockpit digital instrument cluster, or even 12-inch from the Style finish. In the center of the dashboard, Volkswagen incorporates a large vertical touch screen of 10 inches or 12 inches from the Style finish as well.
What price for this new Volkswagen Amarok?
Some physical controls remain, especially to control the volume of the Harman Kardon sound system or the options of the all-wheel drive. The upholstery is mainly made of leather, especially from the PanAmericana and Aventura finishes. The launch of the new Amarok is also an opportunity for Volkswagen to talk about the driving aids that equip the pickup. In addition to six different driving modes, the vehicle receives an adaptive regulator capable of recognizing traffic signs.
The release date of the new Volkswagen Amarok is set for the end of 2022. Its price in France is not communicated at the time of writing. The basic rate should start between €45,000 and €50,000 according to our estimate.
More than ten years after the launch of the first generation of its pickup, Volkswagen is renewing the Amarok. This model is entitled to a new design, sexier than before with its LED lights and headlights, its imposing wheel arches or even its grille that joins its front shield. For this new generation, the Amarok extends by 9.6 centimeters to reach a length of 5.35 meters.
The wheelbase gains 17.3 centimeters, it is fixed at 3.27 meters. Offered as a single or double cabin, the new Amarok has a dumpster that can accommodate two europalettes at once, a cargo of 500 kilos. The payload of the pick-up is set at 1,160 kilos. The new Amarok is mainly offered with 2.0 TDI diesel engines, whose power varies from 150 to 209 horsepower. A 3.0 TDI V6 block with 241 or 250 horsepower is also available, as is a 2.3 TSI engine with 302 horsepower.
