Volkswagen unveils… its new drone to carry passengers
Volkswagen Group China unveils the V.MO, the first prototype passenger drone that falls into the new eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) category, which is electrically powered aircraft with vertical take-off and landing.
With a length of 11.2 m and a wingspan of 10.6 m, the VW drone has 8 rotors to ensure lift and 2 rotors for electric propulsion. In its final version, the V.MO could carry 4 passengers and their luggage over a distance of up to 200 km. A series of tests has already begun but these will be even more advanced in the summer of 2023.
The “flying tiger”
VW has dubbed its new creation Flying tiger, in reference to its black and gold color but also to its launch during the Year of the Tiger, in China.
According to VW, “Urban air mobility is a booming market that aims to use airspace for transport over short and medium distances, especially in intra-urban and intercity spaces. In China, it will play an important role in the future of urban and municipal transport in congested megacities. »
For high-end customers
During the first phase of commercial operation, the V.MO will likely be offered as a premium product to affluent and tech-savvy customers in China, for example, as part of a VIP shuttle service. eVTOL aircraft will be able to carry passengers faster, more efficiently and more flexibly than the means of land transport currently available. As part of this project, Volkswagen Group China will work with the relevant Chinese authorities to obtain the necessary authorizations. Because remember that in the sky, as on the road, we do not do just anything!
